A warehouse storing fireworks exploded on Tuesday (July 1), sending a massive shockwave through the town of Esparto, California. Officials said the fire and subsequent explosion caused numerous spot fires covering roughly 80 acres around the warehouse.
Officials in Yolo County ordered residents within one-square mile to evacuate following the blast. While some people were allowed to return to their homes on Tuesday night, many others remained under the evacuation order.
The explosion also knocked out power for about 2,000 residents. By Wednesday morning, most people had power back, but officials were still working to restore electricity to about 150 customers.
While there were no initial reports of injuries, authorities said that seven people remain unaccounted for following the blast.
Fire officials have not determined what caused the fire and said the investigation remains ongoing.
The explosion was captured from above by a KCRA helicopter, showing the moment the smoldering warehouse exploded in a giant fireball, sending a massive plume of smoke into the air and setting off colorful explosions as the fireworks detonated.
