The Cleveland Browns are on the verge of naming their starting quarterback, with head coach Todd Monken expected to make the announcement today (August 24). The decision comes after a competitive preseason battle between quarterbacks Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders.
Throughout training camp, both Watson and Sanders have alternated taking reps with the first team. Watson started the first preseason game against the Bears, completing 11 of 15 passes for 126 yards. Sanders played in the third quarter of that game, finishing 6-for-11 with 79 yards and an interception. In the second preseason game against the Bills, Sanders started and completed nine of 11 passes for 74 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Watson, in contrast, struggled, completing only five of 12 passes for 36 yards and an interception.
According to ClevelandBrowns.com, Monken emphasized that the decision would be based on the quarterbacks' overall performance throughout training camp and the preseason games. "I think even with yesterday, we have to take in the full body of work," Monken said.
Despite recent boos from fans directed at Watson, Monken stated that fan reactions would not influence his decision. Sanders also addressed the boos, expressing his disappointment and urging fans to show respect to all players.
The Browns will conclude their preseason on Thursday (August 27) against the New England Patriots. Monken has already indicated that neither Watson nor Sanders will play in the final preseason game, opting instead to start Dillon Gabriel and give Taylen Green a chance to play.
The Browns are set to open their regular season on September 13 against Jacksonville, with hopes of contending in the AFC North this year.
