They wrote that their criteria was to "keep the focus on true bands, so we didn’t include vocal groups (who don’t play the majority of their own instruments) — or bands who mostly fell in back of their top-billed front person — but we weren’t overly fussy in defining 'rock' from there."
So with that, here's their list:
- The Beatles
- The Rolling Stones
- Led Zeppelin
- Pink Floyd
- Queen
- Fleetwood Mac
- U2
- Sly & The Family Stone
- Black Sabbath
- Nirvana
- The Who
- Metallica
- AC/DC
- Creedence Clearwater Revival
- Talking Heads
- The Grateful Dead
- Heart
- The Clash
- The Beach Boys
- Radiohead
- Van Halen
- Rage Against the Machine
- Guns N’ Roses
- The Velvet Underground
- Maná
- Pretenders
- Parliament/Funkadelic
- The Allman Brothers Band
- R.E.M.
- Pearl Jam
- Paramore
- Aerosmith
- The White Stripes
- Nine Inch Nails
- Eagles
- Ramones
- Thin Lizzy
- Santana
- Green Day
- Blondie
- The Band
- Earth, Wind & Fire
- No Doubt
- Cafe Tacvba
- The Stooges
- Oasis
- Def Leppard
- Sleater-Kinney
- The Cure
- Red Hot Chili Peppers
- Once again, this list is completely subjective.
- No disrespect to Cafe Tacvba, a Mexican band, or Sleater-Kinney, but what list of the "Best Rock Bands" would in their right mind include them as well as Earth, Wind & Fire, Parliament/Funkadelic and Sly & The Family Stone, all of whom are clearly not rock bands in the way that most folks define "rock."
